How getting a buzz cut changed my life so far
I’ve always wanted to go for the buzz cut. Maybe because I wanted to stand out from the crowd, to feel unique, or maybe just because the buzz cut somehow represented to me my true sense of self. I’ve always wanted to try what life without hair feels like, but never really had the courage to do it. Years ago, I went to the hairdresser and asked her to cut my hair short. Back then I had long hair, but I wanted to get rid of it. I really liked my new hairdo, but still, it was not the style I longed for.
I’m appreciating simplicity in a new way
Then again in October, I started to think about getting the hairstyle of my dreams again. I was still afraid what if I will look terrible with(out) it, but I didn’t want to regret never trying it out. I made a decision: after my graduation ceremony, I would go for it. But life intervened, COVID-19 came and my graduation ceremony was cancelled. As my father is at higher risk for severe illness, I had no choice but to stay at home. My self-quarantine started, and I thought “the time has come”: I got a buzz cut and I’ve loved it from the very first moment.
The buzz cut has certainly brought changes to my life. First, it is super comfortable. I had so many problems with my hair before I cut it. It got greasy fast, it annoyed me, and I didn’t really like my hair in general, no matter how I styled it.
Now I don’t have to deal with the problems I had to face having long hair. No styling or expensive hair care products needed. Also, imagine after washing your hair you just get out of the shower, wipe your head with a towel a few times, and your hair has dried completely. Believe me, it feels as good as it sounds. For sure, the buzz cut makes my life so much easier.
Now, that a virus is threatening us and we are forced to stay at home, simplicity is even more appreciated. I barely leave the house, but when I have to, obviously I want to look good. You never know, when you will meet the love of your life, right? I love having a haircut that doesn’t require styling. My “woke up like this” look is completely acceptable. Another great advantage of my military haircut during COVID-19 is that I do not have to consider my hair as a potential virus carrier; it is much more hygienic than having long hair.
So what buzz cut taught me as for simplicity? That for me, time spent worrying over my hair was wasted time. I don’t need fancy hair products or an extra half an hour in front of the mirror every day. In fact, I enjoy my life more without these things. Of course, these are not the most significant changes, but still worth mentioning. And a big plus: there’s no such a thing as “bad hair day”.
I’m embracing my femininity and self-confidence
To be honest, before buzzing my hair I was also afraid that I would look less feminine without hair. When you google the words “femininity” and “hair” the first result is: “…hair is a fundamental part of femininity”. As you begin to scroll, it becomes clear that long hair is often equated to femininity. You know what? Bullsh*t. I have never felt so feminine before. Why is that? Honestly, I’m not sure. Maybe it’s because, without hair, I can’t hide behind anything; and it’s just me out there. When I had longer hair, it mattered to me how I styled it. When I didn’t feel it was perfect I sometimes felt my whole day was ruined. I think the fact that I longed for a buzz cut and then finally did it makes me feel so good, as it brings me closer to being my true self. I never liked any of my hairstyles as much as I like my buzz cut, and it gave back most of my long-lost self-confidence. To be frank, the compliments I got also helped. Having a buzz cut showed me that I am beautiful no matter what. When you barely have any hair on your head, the focus shifts to the tiny gorgeous details on your face. Your bright eyes, sexy lips, pretty nose or whatever features you sometimes forget to appreciate in the midst of your day-to-day routine
Getting a buzz cut is one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done for myself. If you’ve ever considered going for the buzz, as I did for many years, why not try it?
We are in lockdown, if you don’t like it, no one will see it for the next couple of months anyway. As for me, I can’t wait to take a walk in the city with my coolest hairstyle ever.
